Game #4

This was one that got away really - should have been a lot closer. Some great pick and go from the forwards saw us win our share of go-forward ball, re-cyling ball and retaining possesion over a number of phases. Tom, Moetu and Gus were stand outs in this respect, but all the forwards we working well. But we turned over too much ball from basic errors and wayward passing. The passing in the backs looked very stilted, and we generally lacked penetration. There was the odd exception, when Jack or Billy straightened and took the line on. Too often when the ball was released to the backs we were running across and getting knocked over behind the advantage line. In the end, we got our heads down and they ran through us, which was disappointing.

Player of the day: Moetu

Game #3

A good win to turn the start of the season around. Scored a number of tries from set phase, against some weak tackling. Started to re-cycle ball and put together some second and third phase movements. Some good pick and go from the forwards. Also good passing movements from backs. Went off the boil after scoring three tries to allow Upper Hutt to score a soft one, but came back strongly and lifted the defensive effort, shutting down space and making covering tackles.

Player of the day: Billy Proctor

Game #2

Another tough one - a pretty big loss to a very good Johnsonville side, who moved the ball and created space out wide that stretched our cover defense. A better second half saw us score a good try from a quick break and offload. But we continued to leak tries late in the game. Need to work on shutting down backline space and making tackles behind the advantage line to turn defense into attack, and re-cycling the ball to get second and third phase play going.

Player of the day: Gus Stone

Game #1

Tough loss to Western Terminators first up. Score blew out in the 2nd half.

Player of the day: Tom Sercombe
